Erhürman: Security measures should not become a subject of polemics

Tufan Erhürman issued a written statement on Monday addressing recent security developments on the island, stressing that military measures should not be turned into political polemics amid rising regional tensions.
Erhürman referred to remarks by Nikos Christodoulides, who described the deployment of various military assets by several countries in the southern part of the island as a “security need,” while characterizing Türkiye’s deployment of six F-16 fighter jets and air defence systems aimed at strengthening the security of Turkish Cypriots as a reaction against Europe.
He said that, given the significant escalation of tensions both globally and in the region, engaging in polemics over such matters would not be appropriate within the framework of responsibility and seriousness.
Erhürman added that the time will inevitably come—hopefully soon—when developments on the island linked to the ongoing war will be thoroughly reviewed, and when the causes and consequences of the current situation will be examined alongside the warnings that have long been voiced.
Until then, he emphasized, the foremost concern remains the safety and security of the entire island, including both Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots.
